Starting graduate school abroad is exciting and comes with a lot of preparation. At Avila University Arizona (AUA), we’re here to help you make the journey as smooth as possible. This blog highlights the key things to take care of before you board your flight to Arizona.
1. Secure Your Visa and Documents
- Make sure your passport, F-1 visa, Form I-20, and Admission Letter are all in order.
- Keep copies of financial documentation (like bank statements or sponsor letters).
- Carry these items in your hand luggage, not your checked bags.
2. Plan Your Housing
- Confirm your lease or housing agreement before you travel.
- Explore options like Cabana Bullard, just an 8-minute drive from campus, or other nearby apartments. See our Housing Support page for more resources.
- AUA offers support with off-campus housing. Email housing@arizona.avila.edu for guidance.
3. Book Your Travel
- Fly into Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX).
- Plan how you’ll get to Goodyear (rideshare, public transit, and airport taxi services are available).
- Aim to arrive a few days before orientation so you have time to settle in.
4. Understand Your Health Insurance
- All AUA students are automatically enrolled in health insurance starting on the first day of the month when their program begins.
- Dependents are not covered, so please ensure you have arranged separate insurance if needed.
- Visit our International Student Health Insurance page for more information.
5. Manage Your Finances
- Open a U.S. bank account before departing for Arizona.
- Bring $200-$500 in cash (U.S. dollars) for immediate expenses.
- Stay on top of tuition payment deadlines. Our Student Accounts department (studentaccounts@arizona.avila.edu) can help with questions.
6. Prepare Your Tech and Communication Plans
- Unlock your phone so you can use a U.S. SIM card.
- Save important AUA contact information.
- Research mobile plans—many American carriers offer student discounts.
7. Pack Smart
- Expect warm weather most of the year, but bring a light jacket for cool evenings.
- Don’t forget your laptop, chargers, and power adapters.
- Carry essential medications and documents in your hand luggage.
8. Register for Orientation and Classes
- Look for emails about course registration.
- Sign up for new student orientation to meet faculty and classmates and get to know the campus.
9. Know Your Transportation Options
- Local public transportation: Valley Metro ($2 per ride / $64 monthly pass).
- Rideshare apps: Uber and Lyft are widely used.
- If you plan to drive, budget for car insurance (approximately $100-$150/month).
10. Stay Connected with Campus Support
From visa questions to housing, academics, and career services, AUA’s Student Services team is ready to help. If you’re unsure where to turn, start by emailing studentservices@arizona.avila.edu, and they’ll point you in the right direction.
See You in Goodyear
