Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

CPT is employment authorization for off-campus practical training that is:

  • Directly related to your major field of study, and
  • Required by your program or taken for academic credit as part of a CPT-related course (e.g., internship or practicum).

CPT is approved and recorded in SEVIS by the Designated School Official (DSO). You must receive a new Form I-20 with CPT authorization before beginning work. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) approval is not required for CPT.

Working without prior authorization is a violation of your F-1 status.

  • Part-time CPT: Up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session.
  • Full-time CPT: More than 20 hours per week, usually during scheduled breaks.
  • 12 months or more of full-time CPT at the same degree level makes you ineligible for OPT.

To qualify for CPT, you must:

  • Have been enrolled full-time in F-1 status for at least one academic year.
  • Have a valid job offer related to your field of study.
  • Be enrolled in a CPT-related course during the employment term.
  • Maintain good academic standing.

Your offer letter must:

  • Be on official company letterhead
  • Be signed by the hiring manager or supervisor
  • Include the following details:
    • Job title and duties
    • Physical address of the work location
    • Start and end dates
    • Number of hours per week
  • Download the CPT Request Form from your MyAUA Student Portal under the Student Forms tab.
  • The form lists all required documents you must upload, including your official job offer letter.
  • Incomplete authorization requests will not be processed.
  • Please ensure the CPT Request Form is completed at least one week prior to the start of your CPT.
  • Your academic advisor will verify that the position meets your program requirements.
  • The Designated School Official (DSO) will review your eligibility, contact the employer to confirm job duties, schedule, and start/end dates, and update SEVIS accordingly.

Register for the internship or practicum course associated with your degree program.

You will receive an updated Form I-20 with CPT authorization. Do not begin work before the start date listed on your I-20.
